The 2022 PGA Championship, which was originally scheduled to be held at Trump Bedminster, has now been moved to Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Following January’s insurrection at the United States Capitol, the PGA made the decision to pull the championship from Trump’s golf club, with PGA president Jim Richerson saying “It has become clear that conducting the PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster would be detrimental to the PGA of America brand and would put at risk the PGA’s ability to deliver our many programs and sustain the longevity of our mission.”
Features of Southern Hills
The Golf Course Was Recently Restored
Southern Hills Golf Course was originally opened in 1936. It went through many changes over the years and was restored from 2018 to 2019 to honor golf architect Perry Maxwell’s original course design. Since the completion of the restoration in 2019, Southern Hills now boasts new U.S. Golf Association-spec’d bunkers, greens, cart paths, tees, and a new irrigation system. The restoration also included the laying of 70 acres of new sod.
It Offers Year-Round Golf
In addition to a stunning outdoor course, Southern Hills also has an indoor golf performance facility that features a golf simulator and 4 driving bays, allowing golfers to work on their game all year round, no matter the weather.
The Land Was Originally Donated
The land for the original Southern Hills Country Club was donated by wealthy oil tycoon Waite Phillips. Waite’s vision was of a family-friendly country club that offered a myriad of different facilities for the people of Tulsa to use.
It Has Hosted More PGAs Than Any Other Course
Southern Hills has hosted the PGA more times than any other golf course. It has already hosted the PGA Championship 4 times, making 2022 its 5th. Previous PGA Championships were held at Southern Hills in 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2007.
