Many amateur golfers who haven’t tried getting professionally fitted for clubs wonder whether or not it is worth it. Here’s why we recommend getting your clubs fitted, even if you don’t think you’re an experienced enough golfer.
Why Get a Club Fitting?
Having your golf clubs professionally fitted to you will help improve your swing and your overall game significantly. When you get clubs fitted to your specifications, that means that shaft length, weight, loft, angle, and more will be customized to your exact dimensions and needs. Playing with golf clubs that are not fitted to you is similar to trying to ride a bike that is too big or small for your height–sure, you can probably still do it, but it’s going to be a lot harder and less fun than if you got a bike made for someone your size.
Should I Even Get a Club Fitting if I’m a Beginner?
Yes! Improperly fit clubs can actually hinder your learning experience and lead to bad habits that will be hard to break later. If you are serious about wanting to learn golf, you should have your clubs fit when you’re just starting out. For example, often beginners do better with clubs that have lighter shafts and more loft that have been sized to fit. Professionals recommend getting fitted for clubs, even if you’re “just a beginner.”
That being said, it’s totally understandable when a beginner wants better clubs but isn’t ready to commit to a full set of personalized clubs. If that sounds like you, don’t worry! You can have the best of both worlds. You don’t need to buy an entire set of fitted clubs right away–start with the essentials, such as a driver, a sand wedge, a pitching wedge, and/or a 7-iron. Investing in a few properly fitted clubs will give you the tools you need to learn golf effectively. You can always add to your set later.
