LIV Golf is once again making headlines, this time with its future plans to introduce a relegation system for its players.
What is Relegation?
Relegation is when players with points below a certain score lose their place in a given league or group, and must compete in order to win their place back. This ensures that player rosters are continually refreshed and do not stagnate.
How Relegation Will Work for LIV Golf
In 2023, LIV Golf will integrate a points system for all of their events that will rank players. At the end of the season, the top 24 players will remain in the league while the 4 lowest-ranking players will lose their LIV status and be relegated. Relegated players will then be invited to compete in the LIV Promotions event, where they will have the opportunity to try and regain their LIV status. Some players and team captains may be exempt from relegation, depending on their contracts with LIV.
The intention behind the relegation is to keep the LIV Golf roster fresh and continually evolving over the coming years. Golf star Bryson DeChambeau is pleased about the new system. At this year’s British Open, he told members of the press “It was interesting when I heard about it. I said ‘OK, this made a lot of sense,’ and that again confirmed my position in being part of LIV Golf.”
LIV Golf has been controversial since its inception and continues to be, but whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny that it has brought up a lot of interesting discussion around the game of golf and how it should operate.
