What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is very trendy these days. It is essentially the act of focusing fully on the present, which has been proven to benefit many peoples’ mental wellbeing, reduce stress levels, and increase productivity. It can even help you golf better!
How Can Mindfulness Improve My Golf Game?
Mindfulness allows you to be fully in the present moment, without becoming distracted by negative thoughts or worries about what will come next. It’s a useful way of shutting out the little niggling voices in your head that distract you from what you’re doing. Sounds pretty useful for golf, hey?
Practicing mindfulness can help you to stop overthinking and getting caught up in outside distractions, pressure, and anxiety, which will result in a better golf game and less stress on the course.
How Do I Practice Mindfulness for Golf?
Try this simple mindfulness exercise the next time you’re out on the golf course. Count 5 seconds as you breathe in, hold your breath for 2 counts, and then exhale for 8 seconds. Focus on your breath and on counting as you do this. Repeat three times (or more, if you like). This brings your focus inward, slows your breathing, and helps you to be fully present in the now.
Regular daily meditation will make it much easier for you to get into a mindful state when you are playing golf. Set aside 5-10 minutes every day to sit quietly, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. The goal here isn’t to shut off all thoughts—that’s not possible—but simply to observe your thoughts as they appear and not get caught up in them.
If you want more help with mindfulness and meditation, there are lots of free apps with mindfulness exercises and guided meditations that you can follow.
