What is Casting in Golf?
Casting is when the angle made by the lead (non-dominant) arm and the golf club is released too early. Releasing too early reduces power and creates too much height, resulting in inconsistent shots that often don’t go far enough to reach the target.
What Causes Casting?

Your Grip is too Tight
If your grip is too tight, it reduces control and fluidity, often resulting in casting. Your grip should feel firm but relaxed. You should feel like you have enough control over the club that it isn’t going to slip out of your grip, but it should feel a bit loose in your hands.
Your Wrist is too Active
If you have a lot of movement in your wrist and/or hand during your golf swing, it’s very easy to cast the club too early on the downswing. Try to pay attention to your wrist movement and keep it minimal during your swing.
Leaning too Far Toward the Target
Often, golfers will lean too far toward their target at the top of their backswing, which results in casting. When your lower body is ahead of your upper body on the downswing because you are leaning toward your target, you will naturally cast.
Quick Tips to Stop Casting
- Focus on relaxing your grip, especially your trail hand. It should feel loose and relaxed.
- Think about hitting down through the ball. When you think about the downwards into the ball, it is easier to hit the ball right at the bottom of your swing arc, so you don’t cast.
- To stop yourself from leaning too far towards your target, put some weight onto your back foot and think about turning away from your target at the top of your backswing.
- Stop your backswing a bit earlier than you normally do. This helps keep the lower and upper body connected throughout the downswing and prevents leaning too far.
