A Brief History of Colored Golf Balls
The first colored golf ball was made in 1923 by the Wilson Sporting Goods Company. This ball came in Oriole Orange and Canary Yellow, colors intended to improve visibility. Because of the increased production costs associated with dyeing the balls, Wilson’s 1923 colored golf balls were very expensive and did not do well because of this–your average golfer simply couldn’t afford them. The ball was taken off the market at the time, but Wilson reintroduced their colored golf balls six decades later in 1982. Other golf ball companies had already started issuing colorful options in the 1970s, and they slowly became more and more popular. By the 1990s, most golf ball brands had colorful options and were popular among golfers at every skill level because they increased visibility and allowed golfers to express their personality.
The 1982 Hawaiian Open marked a milestone as the first PGA event where a golfer won using a colored golf ball. Wayne Levi secured his victory with a bright yellow ball. Just two months later, pro golfer Jerry Pate won the PGA Championship with an orange golf ball. Colored golf balls have since become less typically used by golf pros, with the notable exception of Bubba Watson. The newest colored golf balls exhibit exceptional design and technology, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see them make a comeback in professional golf.
