A major part of golf is your mental game. Here are three essential mental skills for golfers and tips on how to improve them.
Focus and Staying in the Now
We live in the age of multitasking, and actually focusing fully on one thing is just not something that we do too often. It’s a skill that can be learned, though, and is extremely important for playing golf well. To really get your shot right, you need to be able to block out any outside distractions, including other people on the course and your own thoughts. Practicing mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing are all great ways to improve this skill.
Positive Self-Talk
Coming into the game with a confident attitude goes a long way, no matter your skill level. We all get frustrated and can find ourselves falling into negative thought cycles such as “I can’t make this shot,” “because I messed up the last shot my whole game is ruined,” etc. If you notice these thoughts as they arise and make a conscious effort to put a positive spin on them (“this type of shot is usually very hard for me, but every time I try it I get better,” for example). As you get in this habit of positive self-talk, you’ll cultivate more confidence and that will come out in your game.
Valuing Failure
If you want to get good at golf, you’re going to have to be okay with being really bad at golf first. When you learn any skill, you start by not being very good at it. That’s why you’re learning. And the same goes for improving: if you want to improve your golf game, you start that by leaning into aspects of golf that are challenging for you, and you slowly master them. To be a great golfer, it is essential to recognize that failure has a lot of value because it is a symptom of learning and, therefore, improving. A great way to start valuing failure and seeing how much it contributes to your success is to give yourself “failure goals” during practice. Try to fail at 5 things each time your practice! This will push you to try stuff that’s out of your comfort zone and develop new skills.
