What are Practice & Range Balls?
Range balls, also sometimes called practice balls, have a unique construction compared to the majority of golf balls available. While standard golf balls prioritize performance in their design, range balls are specifically crafted with an emphasis on durability. Range balls generally have two-piece construction with a rubber core and a thick outer cover. The thicker cover makes range balls a little heavier than typical golf balls, resulting in less distance and spin.
Like any other golf ball, the performance of a range ball is heavily influenced by your individual playing style and varies from person to person. Generally, most golfers observe reduced distance and spin when using a range ball compared to a standard one. This is attributed to the thicker cover and the primary distinction between range and regular balls: the feel. When you hit a range ball, it tends to feel firmer than a regular ball, making it more challenging to give it much spin.
Drills for Practice & Range Balls
Tempo Variation Drill
It’s crucial to notice shifts in your golf swing speed while you’re playing, especially when the pressure is on. Try taking shots at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% tempo. This helps you figure out your best tempo, hone your control, and become more aware of tempo changes during an actual round.
Tension Variation Drill
When the pressure is on, the amount of tension in your body can increase greatly without you being aware of it. When we’re extra nervous or under pressure, pay attention to changes in tension, especially in your grip. To gain more control over your grip tension, experiment with varying your grip pressure on the range, from a tight 10/10 to a light 1/10, and observe how it impacts your shots.
Distance Variation Drill
Take your 5-iron and aim at targets of various distances (we usually do 200, 175, 150, 125, and finally 100 yards). While this isn’t something you’d normally do during a round, it’s a useful exercise for honing your feel for shots.This drill helps you develop a good sense of feel and the ability to adjust your club’s distance to get the ball as close to your target as possible.
