Just because the temperature is dropping, that doesn’t mean you have to put away your clubs for the rest of the year! With the right preparation, you can have a blast golfing in the fall and winter, and play better too. Here are our best tips for cold weather golf.
Dress for the Temperature
Ensure that you dress properly for the cold weather so that you’re comfortable while you golf. Wear layers so you can stay cozy but shed a layer or two if you start to warm up, and bring extra thick socks and hand warmers to keep your extremities toasty.
Keep Your Balls Warm
No, this isn’t another section on dressing in warm clothes. We’re talking about keeping your golf balls warm. If a gold ball gets too cold, it will play differently. Simply keeping a ball or two in your pocket will keep them warm with your body heat and they will play better for you.
Warm Up Your Muscles
Going straight into golfing in the cold will have your body feeling stiff, tight, and not at all in good form for your best swing. Take a few minutes to stretch your body first and get warmed up (do a few jumping jacks or any other cardio that gets your heart rate up) so that you’re loose and ready to swing.
Stay Hydrated
It’s easy to forget to drink water when it’s cold out and you don’t feel as obviously thirsty. Your body still needs just as much water as on a warm day. Make sure that you pack a water bottle and drink up often.
Opt to Walk Instead of Taking a Cart
When possible, walk instead of taking a cart. Walking will get your blood flowing, keep you warmed up, and loosen your muscles so you’ll play better and be at a more comfortable temperature.
Switch to a Softer Golf Ball
When a golf ball is exposed to cold air, it becomes slightly harder and more difficult to compress, so when you play in cold weather it’s a good idea to switch to a slightly softer golf ball than what you usually use.
