Work on Your Short Game
Many people practice their long game a lot more than their short game, and this causes a lot of inconsistencies when it comes to putting. Give your short game practice at least as much time as you do your long game, learn how to read the green, and try different putting drills.
Drill the Stuff You Don’t Like
There are always parts of the game that you’re not going to like, and those are probably the things you’re not so good at. Take note of which types of shots you dislike and then drill those over and over again in practice. We promise you’ll start to like them more as you get better and see your overall game improve because of it.
Take Practice Swings
Particularly when you are changing clubs, taking practice swings is important. Take the time to take a practice swing or two before the real thing in order to make sure you’re used to the club you’re working with. All too often, when people switch clubs, they don’t take into account the difference in length and their swing comes out all wrong.
Learn to Let it Go
Getting frustrated because of one bad shot is a common culprit of playing inconsistently and poorly for the rest of the game. The fact is that you’re not going to hit the ball perfectly every time (not even the pros can do that!), but you can control your reaction to when something goes wrong. Working on controlling your frustration and not getting emotionally thrown off when something doesn’t go your way can really improve your game and keep you playing like yourself.
A great way to get started is to check out our blog on mindfulness for golfers and give some of those techniques a try.
Have a Pre-Shot Routine and Do it Every Time
We’ve talked about the importance of a pre-shot routine before, and we’ll say it again: a pre-shot routine is essential to a consistent golf game. Doing the same thing before every shot gets you mentally in the zone to take a shot, gets you properly aligned and in position, and makes it easier to concentrate on what you’re doing instead of being distracted by outside factors. See how to create a killer pre-shot routine here.
