With only a handful of events left in a season that has been full of surprises, Bill Haas sits atop the overallFedEx Cup points standings and is eyeing his second consecutive points title. The chase has essentially boiled down to a two horse race as Haas currently leads Webb Simpson by 15 points, which happens to be the exact margin by which he won his title last year.
Like many of his fellow PGA Tour players, Haas uses a Titleist ProV1X, and he has been playing Titleist balls since as far back as he can remember. Although he is going to be tough to catch and would certainly be a worthy winner of the 2011 FedEx Cup, the top 10 is filled with young talent that is going to be on display for many years to come. Here’s a quick rundown of the field.
Webb Simpson
With two victories and two 2nd place finishes this year, Webb Simpson has emerged as one of the world’s premiere golfers. A scoring average below 70 is an indication that Simpson is a consistent player in any environment, and the 26-year-old is likely to be around for a very long time.
Luke Donald
The England native has put together an impressive year and is one of the vast legion of pros that plays a Titleist ProV1X golf ball. His five top 3 finishes are highlighted by a convincing victory at the Accenture Match Play Championship.
Dustin Johnson
Dustin Johnson, who currently sits in 4th place in the overall points standings. Four top 3 finishes have catapulted Johnson up the rankings and into the rare air of contenders. A win at the Barclays garnered Johnson praise, attention and valuable cup points.
Justin Rose
The baby-faced Rose has been a member of the PGA Tour for about a decade, and his experience is beginning to translate into consistent appearances atop leaderboards all over the world. Rose won the BMW Championship in September and hopes to make a late push upward toward his first ever FedEx Cup title.
Matt Kuchar
Matt Kuchar has yet to win on the PGA Tour in 2011, but his nine top 10 finishes have cemented his place on the FedEx Cup leaderboard. Kuchar has bagged three career victories, including a 2-stroke win at the 2002 Honda classic as a 23-year-old.
Hunter Mahan
Two 2nd place finishes and 13 top 25 finishes have propelled Hunter Mahan into the 7th slot, where he sits with exactly 1,800 points. The Oklahoma State graduate is laid-back yet dedicated and tireless in his practice routine, which often involves several small piles of used golf balls.
Brandt Snedeker
The Nashville native felt right at home in South Carolina earlier this season, where he won The Heritage after a playoff with Luke Donald. Snedeker has all the tools to put together a long and illustrious career in professional golf and has been using Bridgestone balls for the past few years.
Nick Watney
Two convincing victories and one 2nd place finish would normally be enough to vault a person to the top of the points standings, but Watney will have to settle for 9th place for now. Nonetheless, the Sacramento-born pro is primed for a run at the title in 2012.
Chez Reavie
Chez Reavie snuck into the top 10 in overall points by way of a scoring average that is just a whisker above 70. Reavie is living proof that the tour is currently wide open and ripe for the taking.
