Still struggling with your golf game and feel like you’re not improving with practice? Your stance may be the problem. Mastering the perfect golf stance will help you achieve a more consistent swing while improving your aim. Follow these simple steps to get your golf stance right.
Width
Use your golf club to measure the distance between your shoulders, then use your club to check and make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart. For longer clubs like a driver, you should move your feet out a little so that they are about two to three inches wider than shoulder width. For short irons and wedges, move your feet in so they are one or two inches closer together than shoulder width.
Alignment
Alignment is important to help you get your ball where you want it to go. When you hit your ball, you want your clubface to be pointing towards your target. This is easier said than done and takes lots of practice. However, alignment isn’t just about the clubface – you also have to get your foot positioning right. Make sure your feet are in line parallel to your target line. The easiest way to do this is to use an alignment stick (or an extra golf club) to mark your positioning and make it easy to see if your feet aren’t in line.
Posture
To get the perfect golf posture, start by standing with your feet hip-width apart, hinging at the hips and pushing your rear out, letting your upper back round a little. Bend your knees very slightly and put the majority of weight in the balls of your feet. Your arms should hang straight down from your chest to hold your club.
Ball Position
Proper ball positioning depends on which club you’re using. When you’re using a driver, you should place the ball forward in your stance, near the heel of your lead foot. With a wedge, position the ball toward the back, almost reaching the middle of your stance. For all other clubs, gradually move the ball farther back as the club length decreases. This means that for fairways, hybrids, and long irons, you should set the ball inside your lead foot. For mid irons (numbers 5, 6, and 7), position the ball approximately midway between the inside of your lead foot and the center of your stance.
