After over a year of deliberation, the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) denied LIV Golf’s application for world ranking points. Now, LIV Golf has officially withdrawn its application. This means LIV Golf is no longer bothering to pursue world ranking points, since they see it as a futile attempt.
Greg Norman on the LIV Golf World Rankings Withdrawal
LIV Golf CEO and Commissioner Greg Norman issued a letter to LIV players, stating that:
“A resolution which protects the accuracy, credibility and integrity of the OWGR rankings no longer exists. We have made significant efforts to fight for you and ensure your accomplishments are recognized within the existing ranking system. Unfortunately, OWGR has shown little willingness to productively work with us.”
This statement from Norman makes it pretty clear that he feels the OWGR’s rejection is personal. LIV Golf has sparked a lot of controversy in the golf world over the past few years, and there is palpable tension surrounding the Saudi-backed league and the PGA, which has long been associated with the OWGR.
OWGR’s Response
Peter Dawson, the chairman of the OWGR board, refutes the idea that OWGR is biased against LIV Golf. He had this to say about LIV Golf’s rejection:
“We are not at war with them…LIV players are self-evidently good enough to be ranked. They’re just not playing in a format where they can be ranked equitably with the other 24 tours and thousands of players trying to compete on them.”
Whether the rejection was personal or not, LIV Golf’s subsequent withdrawal of their OWGR application is sure to increase the rift between the Saudi-backed league and US-based golf organizations. If you are more of an LIV fan or a PGA stan, you can’t deny that things have gotten very interesting with golf lately, and it seems like that’s only going to continue.
